Windrow composting of agricultural and municipal wastes

Kuhlman, L.R., 1990. Window composting of agricultural and municipal wastes. Eur. Symp. on Integrated Resource Recovery from Municipal Solid Wastes. Resour. Conserv. Recycl., 4: 1 5 1 160. Many wastes are produced from agricultural and municipal facilities that are not suitable for direct land application. Composting these wastes converts them to a humus-containing organic material advantageous for crop production. Major advantages are to stabilize the wastes, substantially reduce the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (in the case of agricultural residues and municipal solid wastes), reduce and virtually eliminate odors, weed seeds, and pathogens and to produce a product easily handled mechanically. Comporting is accomplished under aerobic conditions developing temperatures of 55 "C or higher. The windrow technique is simple and accomplished easily with standard equipment. Specialized windrow aeration equipment has been developed for use when large amounts of waste are involved. Municipal sludge is readily composted in combination with finished sludge compost or other products in windrows aerated twice or more per week with virtually complete pathogen destruction.

Evaluation of composting as a strategy for managing organic wastes from a municipal market in Nicaragua.
A pilot-scale study was undertaken to evaluate alternatives to the solid waste management of a Central American municipal market located in Estelí, Nicaragua. The municipal solid waste from the local market is the second largest contributor to the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream. Waste from the market without any previous sorting or treatment is open dumped. The options evaluated in this stu...
متن کاملPretreatment of municipal solid waste prior to landfilling.
An outdoor pilot-scale study was undertaken to pretreat municipal solid waste by windrow composting. The raw waste was introduced to active composting without any source separation or pulverization. Pretreatment indicators were developed and used as a tool to measure the optimum level of sorting and waste stabilization. The moisture content of the waste dropped from 68% to 61% and the pile atta...
متن کاملLCA comparison of windrow composting of yard wastes with use as alternative daily cover (ADC).
This study compared the environmental impacts of composting yard wastes in windrows with using them in place of soil as alternative daily cover (ADC) in landfills. The Life Cycle Assessment was made using the SimaPro LCA software and showed that the ADC scenario is more beneficial for the environment than windrow composting. ADC use is also a less costly means of disposal of yard wastes. This f...
متن کاملAn integrated approach of composting methodologies for solid waste management
Organic fraction of solid waste, which upon degradation produces foul smell and generates pathogens, if not properly managed. Composting is not a method of waste disposal but it is a method of waste recycling and used for agricultural purposes. An integrated approach of composting methodology was tested for municipal solid waste management. Solid waste first was composted and after 22 days, was...
متن کاملComparison of methods for evaluating stability and maturity of co-composting of municipal solid wastes and sewage sludge in semi-arid pedo-climatic condition
The step of maturation (around 60 days) appeared less active as compared to the first step of pre-fermentation (around 90 days) since the values of temperature, recorded during the second step of maturation, are found generally less important than those recorded during the first step. A similar tendency of C/N ratio values decrease is generally observed in the two piles of wastes during the two...
